Use of dry ice as coolant - UN1845
When transporting samples with dry ice, the following regulations must be observed:
a) Packing instructions
Requirements for packaging when using dry ice as a coolant:
- Packaging must be able to withstand very low temperatures and must not be affected by the coolant.
- Gas relief to prevent pressure build-up must be possible.
- Dry ice must be placed outside the secondary packaging.
b) Labeling of the outer packaging
- Sticker for dry ice transport with weight indication.
The marking shall be permanent, legible, visible and proportionate in relation to the size of the package.
Required labeling may vary depending on the courier and parcel services. Additional information may be required.
- Alignment arrows on two opposite sides of the outer packaging.

c) Transport document
The bill of lading/cargo letter (= Frachtbrief) of the freight forwarding company (FedEx etc.) must be completed carefully. Please give the sender copy to our secretary. This is absolutely necessary for administrative purposes .
